It’s all up hill from here !

I managed to get out between rainstorms over the weekend to get some time in running up hill ! Sounds strange I know, but if I am to be climbing a total of 5,000ft in this 3 Peaks Challenge I thought I had better try and get as much time going up hill as possible. I elected to run up and down and around Portsdown Hill which over look Portsmouth. They are a prominent  landmark for anyone that knows the area.

I parked up in Porchester, which on a Sunday morning is quiet to say the least. and started off on my route, within 1/4 mile I was at the base of the first climb which starts by Porchester Train station. From here the road winds up to the top of the hill after 3 miles. Yep ! 3 miles straight up hill, I surprised myself that I continued running all the way, which psychologically was a great turning point. I knew that if I just plodded at a set pace (12min miles) I would go forever. At the top I had a great view over both sides of the Portsdown Hills. To the South was Portsmouth and to the North the Meon Valley.

The problem with being at the top I could only go one way, a long 1 1/2 mile trudge down past Southwick and towards Wickham. At the bottom I turned South again and started to climb. I’m not sure how far this leg was as it was 3 times steeper that the first climb. My Heart Rate Monitor was blasting out at 97% max and I had a great view of the tarmac 2ft in front of me ! As I neared the top I turned a corner only to find a short sharp shock for the final 500m. It was at this stage my iPod kicked in with Jerusalem and Swing Low, which somehow managed to give me fresh vigour to reach the summit and onto Nelsons Monument.

From here is was all plain sailing (excuse the pun) down into Porchester, but running down hill is sometimes more painful than running up. However, I was reinvigorated with with music, Nelson and the sight of the finish line. A total of just over 8 miles and completed in 1hr 35 mins, please note – I am not proud of these times as if they are going to get me into The Games in London next year as a late entry, just more of a point of reference from where I started – 2 miles distance along the flat of Lee on Solent !

Am I ready for the 3 Peaks ? not by a long way, but at least I am beginning to enjoy the training. I have a busy work week this week and getting time to train will be difficult, so it might be early starts and late finishes, but I only have 3 weeks to get fit enough.

In case you haven’t sponsored me please do by going to our donation site by clicking here and leave a comment so I know it’s from you and for my efforts, it’s a very worthy cause otherwise I wouldn’t be putting myself through all this.

Thanks for making it this far down the blog – I will write some property related scripts in the near future !

Kind regards,

Mike

The training continues !

I managed to get a quick training run in yesterday between a networking breakfast and going to work. Since starting Belvoir I have found it increasingly difficult to find to train or keep fit (I’m sure most business start ups are the same). It is only by entering for this challenge and making it so public that I am now “miraculously” finding time to train. Peer pressure is a great motivator and I know with all the people sponsoring me at our just giving site and leaving me a message of encouragement means that I cannot let these people down and I cannot let Macmillan down.

So continuing on with my Steven Spielberg training course I have uploaded yesterdays video post training run, it was only 4 1/2 miles and it was slow but just managed to sneak it in before heading off to work.

You can view the video below and you can sponsor me by clicking here. See if you can see the deliberate mistake in the video!
